Clay Workshop

Materials to prepare

• Connect your computer to the classroom screen and speakers. Check sound before children arrive. Internet is needed.
• Preview the activity and writing sheets. Print enough for your group, prepare word cards and an exit check, and keep the teacher guide nearby. Cut cards and print the matching spaces at the same scale.
• Teacher-prepared child-appropriate clay, a tray or mat, and a container for each group. Keep clay on the table; no heating or sharp tools are needed. With no clay, trace one large printed G, O or C with a finger, then use the paper word cards.
• Keep the lesson slides ready if a video does not play. Read the English notes and model the action yourself.

Lesson flow · 45-minute guide

1. 0–4 min

   1. Hello Routine

   Play Hello Song and model making a circle with your hands.

   Teaching notes

   Say

   Let's sing hello. Make a circle with your hands.

   Look for

   Watch for children forming a circle with their hands.

   If difficult

   Let children copy the hand shape without singing.

2. 4–9 min

   2. Review Bridge

   Review mad and dad, then briefly contrast the sounds of A and O.

   Teaching notes

   Say

   Let's read mad and dad. Now listen to these two sounds.

   Look for

   Listen for children copying the two vowel sounds differently.

   If difficult

   Model and repeat one vowel sound before comparing the two.

3. 9–14 min

   3. Bubble Theater

   Play the Clay Workshop story.

   Teaching notes

   Say

   Let's watch our clay story.

   Look for

   Watch for children following the story on the screen.

   If difficult

   Pause on one picture and briefly describe it.

4. 14–24 min

   4. Sound Discovery

   Point out the shapes of G, O, and C while modeling each letter's sound.

   Teaching notes

   Say

   Look at each letter's shape. Make its sound with me.

   Look for

   Listen for children making the sound of the letter you indicate.

   If difficult

   Focus on one letter and repeat its sound together.

5. 24–32 min

   5. Guided Practice

   Arrange G-O-T and C-O-T, pointing to each letter as you blend each word.

   Teaching notes

   Say

   Let's build got. Now let's build cot.

   Look for

   Listen for children changing the first sound between got and cot.

   If difficult

   Keep O-T in place and help children change only the first letter.

6. 32–37 min

   6. Singing Bubble

   Play the G/O/C chant and model its clay-rolling motion.

   Teaching notes

   Say

   Let's chant our sounds. Pretend to roll the clay.

   Look for

   Watch for children following the clay-rolling motion.

   If difficult

   Let children copy the motion without chanting.

7. 37–43 min

   7. STEAM Worksheet

   Roll a short piece of clay and bend it into a curve for children to copy.

   Teaching notes

   Say

   Roll the clay. Bend it into a curve.

   Look for

   Watch for children bending the clay into a curved shape.

   If difficult

   Let children trace a curved letter on the worksheet instead.

8. 43–45 min

   8. Exit Ticket

   Show G, O, and C and make the sound of one letter.

   Teaching notes

   Say

   Listen to the sound. Choose the matching letter.

   Look for

   Watch for children choosing the letter that matches the sound.

   If difficult

   Offer two letters and repeat the sound.

Story voices

The class screen shows each picture. Read both voices, pause, and invite the children to join in.
