SESSION 10 · PREPARE

Card Lab

Learning targets

CVC Blending I

sad · sit · dog

Model the sounds, invite a response, and help children try again. Participation and independent reading are different observations.

Materials to prepare

  • Connect your computer to the classroom screen and speakers. Check sound before children arrive. Internet is needed.
  • Preview the activity and writing sheets. Print enough for your group, prepare word cards and an exit check, and keep the teacher guide nearby. Cut cards and print the matching spaces at the same scale.
  • Use the four-page play sheet, scissors handled by an adult, and the word images. Nine loose cards let all three words stay on the table together. Print the cards and building spaces at the same scale.
  • Keep the lesson slides ready if a video does not play. Read the English notes and model the action yourself.

Story voices

The class screen shows each picture. Read both voices, pause, and invite the children to join in.

1. Welcome to the card lab
  • Jimin: Welcome to the card lab!
  • Adam: Let's blend!
  • Jimin: Sound time!

Read both voices. Raise three fingers to prepare for the three letter places. The cards in this picture are blank; do not ask children to read words from them.

2. One place at a time
  • Adam: Sound by sound!
  • Jimin: Slide them together!
  • Adam: Listen close!

Tap three places on your palm from left to right, then sweep across them. Model sounds with printed sad cards in the next stage; no letters are visible on these story cards.

3. Three words appear
  • Jimin: Pop!
  • Adam: We can blend!
  • Jimin: We made a word!

Point to the visible word dog and read it together. The written word and teacher model support this response. Use plain word cards later for a fresh reading attempt.

4. Cards away
  • Jimin: Cards all clear!
  • Adam: Shuffle again soon!
  • Jimin: Great work!

Wave with the characters, then bring hands down. Move into blending with real sad, sit and dog cards. No one needs to stand up.
