SESSION 14 · PREPARE

Phonics Festival

Learning targets

Sound & Word Review

sad · sit · dog · map · sun · bus · pot · top · log · dad · hot

Model the sounds, invite a response, and help children try again. Participation and independent reading are different observations.

Materials to prepare

  • Connect your computer to the classroom screen and speakers. Check sound before children arrive. Internet is needed.
  • Preview the activity and writing sheets. Print enough for your group, prepare word cards and an exit check, and keep the teacher guide nearby. Cut cards and print the matching spaces at the same scale.
  • Prepare the word menu, pencils or stickers and selected word cards. The small letter kit builds pot/top/dad/dog only. Use the full pack or write extra letter cards for other choices. Reading a word card is also enough.
  • Keep the lesson slides ready if a video does not play. Read the English notes and model the action yourself.

Lesson flow · 45-minute guide

  1. 0–4 min

    1. Hello Routine

Welcome children with a small seated wave. Show the word menu and let them choose two familiar words.

    Teaching notes
    Say
Hello, everyone! Let's start our festival.
    Look for
Listen for children returning the greeting.
    If difficult
Model a short hello for children to repeat.
  2. 4–9 min

    2. Review Bridge

Choose two or three familiar letter cards from today's words. Model their sounds one at a time.

    Teaching notes
    Say
Let's try a sound we know.
    Look for
Notice whether children make the sound before or after your model.
    If difficult
Model one sound, then let children point to its letter.
  3. 9–14 min

    3. Bubble Theater

Read the four original scenes or play the story. Its alphabet and speed dialogue belongs to the story; practice has no reading race.

    Teaching notes
    Say
    Let's watch our festival story.
    Look for
Watch for children following the story on the screen.
    If difficult
Pause on one picture and briefly describe it.
  4. 14–24 min

    4. Sound Challenge

Choose a letter sound in random order and ask children to find its card among the review letters.

    Teaching notes
    Say
Listen to the sound. Find the matching letter card.
    Look for
Watch for children selecting the letter card that matches the sound.
    If difficult
Offer two letter cards and repeat the sound.
  5. 24–32 min

    5. Word Challenge

Choose two or three of the eleven review words from the menu. Swap p and t in pot/top; for dad/dog, keep the first d and replace the middle and last letters. Use two d cards for dad. Keep a comfortable pace.

    Teaching notes
    Say
Choose a word. Let's read it. Now read the next word card.
    Look for
Notice which word was read without a model, and which needed picture or spoken help.
    If difficult
Read one whole word aloud and let children echo it.
  6. 32–37 min

    6. Singing Bubble

Play the Review chant and model its words for children to follow.

    Teaching notes
    Say
    Let's chant and practice again.
    Look for
Listen for children joining a familiar part of the chant.
    If difficult
Model one short part slowly for children to repeat.
  7. 37–43 min

    7. Festival Worksheet

Find two chosen words on the word menu. Add a sticker or pencil star after trying; it marks participation. If time allows, draw one clue card, hide its word, let a partner guess, then uncover and read it together.

    Teaching notes
    Say
Find your chosen word. Add a sticker or draw a star.
    Look for
Notice the chosen words and how children join the word exchange. A picture guess is not independent reading.
    If difficult
Offer two word cards or point together. Skip drawing and pass a word card if that is easier.
  8. 43–45 min

    8. Exit Ticket

Offer one familiar word without a picture first. If help is needed, model it, then note the help separately.

    Teaching notes
    Say
Choose one word to read. Take your time.
    Look for
Record the selected word, the strategy used, and whether you modeled it.
    If difficult
Let children choose between two cards, then read one together.

Story voices

The class screen shows each picture. Read both voices, pause, and invite the children to join in.

1. Welcome to the festival
  • Jimin: Welcome to the festival!
  • Adam: Let's play the game!
  • Jimin: So much fun!

Read the original voices, then wave from your place. Show the word menu and explain that children may choose just two familiar words. No parade around the room is required.

2. Letters on the board
  • Adam: a, b, c...
  • Jimin: All the way to z!
  • Adam: We know them all!

Read the original alphabet dialogue. Invite one visible letter, without testing all twenty-six from this illustration. Use actual review cards for sounds and words. The line We know them all! belongs to the story, not a report about the class.

3. A festival cheer
  • Jimin: Quick, quick!
  • Adam: We did it!
  • Jimin: Super fast!

Keep the original Quick, quick! and Super fast! dialogue. For the class invitation, lower the pace and offer one seated cheer. Do not time reading or require jumping. Put the timer image aside and return to a word chosen by the child.

4. Choose a word to share
  • Jimin: What a party!
  • Adam: Celebrate again soon!
  • Jimin: Keep playing!

Read the original farewell, then invite a child to choose a word card. They may read, echo or point; note the support separately. The fireworks are a still picture, not a cue to add flashing effects.
